Transport for London (TfL) is currently consulting on changes to the cleaner vehicle discount to the congestion charge, which at the moment gives a 100% discount to electric vehicles (meaning they don’t have to pay the Congestion Charge).
TfL are proposing that from 2026 electric vans, trucks and quadricycles will get a 50% discount, and electric cars a 25% discount. Whilst we are happy to see that the Congestion Charge Cleaner Vehicle Discount is not ending, the current proposals will hit small businesses and charities hard. They also risk setting London’s climate ambitions back.
Under these current proposals, charities and small businesses who have switched to using an electric van face a new £9 daily charge to drive in central London. That’s more than £3,000 a year, per vehicle. Some of them may even have to shift back to diesel to make ends meet.
This financial strain will also discourage the future uptake of electric vans, undermining London’s health and environmental targets.
EVA England supports Clean Cities and the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) in calling for a 100% discount for electric vans, Heavy Goods Vehicles and quadricycles operated by SMEs and charities.
