The Department for Transport, together with the Motability Foundation and the British Standards Institution, are leading important work to develop a minimum standard for accessibility for chargepoints, known as PAS 1899.

That work is reaching its conclusion, and we hope to see this minimum standard being rolled out for new chargepoints by the end of this year.

One of the most challenging points for the team to grapple with? Cable weight!

The more high-powered the chargepoint, the bigger the cable needs to be, and so the heavier it becomes, making charging harder for some drivers.

For that reason, this part of the standard (e.g. how heavy the cables should be to ensure they are fully accessible) is likely to require more monitoring and refinement over a longer period of time than other parts of the standard.

This is where you come in!

To help us engage effectively in that monitoring process, we want to get feedback from you, the driver, on what feels is currently an acceptable cable weight for the different types of public chargepoints you use today, and where you feel improvements are needed.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us, your insights will help us ensure public charging works for everyone.

We believe that everyone deserves access to clean transportation so if you know other drivers who might want to share their thoughts, please forward the survey to them. The more responses we get, the better picture we’ll have of the current cable challenges and how we might be able to entangle them.

And if you’re not a member yet, make sure to join EVA England so that together we can make the voice of EV drivers heard.
